Highlights of the Haute Route

  • Arrive in Switzerland, follow your individual train itinerary (provided) to Lauterbrunnen. Dinner and group orientation at our hotel.

    Overnight: Lauterbrunnen

  • Hike from the storybook village of Lauterbrunnen up through alpine meadows and past cascading waterfalls to the remote mountain inn at Obersteinberg. This classic trail offers sweeping views of glaciers and snowcapped peaks along the way. Enjoy a peaceful evening at the charming, candle-lit inn — a rare glimpse of traditional Swiss mountain life.

    Distance: 5-7 miles | Ascent: 2800 ft | Descent: 250 ft

    Overnight: Obersteinberg

  • From Obersteinberg, follow a scenic alpine trail across high pastures and along panoramic ridgelines toward the car-free village of Mürren. The route offers stunning views of the Jungfrau, Mönch, and Eiger as you descend past waterfalls and traditional chalets. Arriving in Mürren, enjoy the charm of this mountaintop village perched high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

    Train to Grindelwald.

    Distance: 4.5-5 miles | Ascent: 1200 ft | Descent: 2600 ft

    Overnight: Grindelwald

  • Start the morning with a breathtaking railway or gondola ride to Eigergletscher, perched at the foot of the famous Eiger North Face. From there, descend along panoramic alpine trails toward Kleine Scheidegg and onward to Grindelwald, surrounded by glaciers, wildflower meadows, and sweeping views of the Bernese Alps. This route offers one of the most iconic vistas in Switzerland.

  • Today's journey from Grindelwald to Zermatt is one of Switzerland's classic alpine rail experiences. Travel through the lush Bernese Oberland to Interlaken before arriving in the car-free mountain village of Zermatt beneath the iconic Matterhorn.

    To make the most of the alpine conditions, today's activities will be scheduled according to the weather. Enjoy either a morning excursion in Grindelwald before our train ride, or an afternoon activity in Zermatt once we have arrived.

  • Ride the classic mountain railway to the Gornergrat to see the 360° panorama of the highest concentration of 4000m peaks in the Alps, with the Matterhorn towering above glaciers and peaks. Enjoy a scenic hike that offers constant, breathtaking views of this iconic mountain. It’s a quintessential Zermatt experience.

  • After breakfast, depart Zermatt at your leisure, traveling aboard the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway through the stunning Mattertal Valley as you continue onward to your next destination. Train tickets will be provided.

  • All transportation Starting on Day 1 from anywhere within Switzerland to our first hotel, and ending with train onward (to anywhere within Switzerland) on day 7

Swiss Alps Packing List

  • A $500 per person deposit and completion of the Tour Registration form is due at the time of registration to guarantee your space and the price quoted above. Final payment is due 60 days prior to departure. You will be sent an invoice and can pay via ACH payment on the Mountain Connections website.

  • The activity level of this trip is moderate. Guests should be able to hike up to 6 miles at a time with an elevation gain and/or loss of 2800 vertical feet.

  • Cancellations made more than 60 days prior to departure are fully refundable. Refunds for cancellations between 30 and 60 days of departure are subject to what I can recover from in-country vendors. Cancellations made less than 30 days before departure are non-refundable (I highly suggest insuring your trip and suggest www.insuremytrip.com or https://www.chubb.com/us-en/individuals-families/products/travel.html).

    Cancellations of individual room nights or non-use of prepaid meals during the trip are not refundable. Transportation vouchers and rail passes are bearer documents and cannot be refunded if lost or stolen.

  • All trips require a minimum of 6 participants. I would suggest not buying any non-refundable airfare until we have met that minimum. If there are not 6 registered guests by January 31st, I'll cancel the trip and give full refunds to all guests.

  • Sometimes it rains, or even snows. Sometimes trains are late. Sometimes pandemics break out. I will do my best to manage any such potential situations and provide alternate activities when possible, but I can only do my best. Adapting to the unexpected is what adventure is all about. :)
